4 Most Common Questions About Ductless Mini Split Systems

You've probably heard of Ductless Mini Split Systems at some point or another. They sound interesting, but you have lots of questions.

You're not alone!

Many homeowners have questions regarding ductless systems, we aim to answer the most commonly asked questions in this section.

What is a Ductless Mini Split System?

A Ductless Mini-Split system is just as it sounds. It's a miniature version of a split central heating and air conditioning system. But it does not use ducts to deliver heat or air, so it avoids the energy loss associated with leaking duct systems. This mini split system is comprised of 3 different components.

  • A condensing unit located outside of your home (pictured to the right)
  • An indoor wall unit located in the desired room/area (pictured above)
  • A conduit that links the outdoor and indoor units. This houses the power cables, refrigerant tubing and drain lines.

When would I need a Ductless System?

Because mini splits don't need ducts, they're great for adding heating and cooling for:

  • Garages or shop areas
  • Home renovations
  • Home additions
  • Sun rooms
  • Pool house
  • Areas of your home that get too hot or cold

Is a window unit the same as ductless?

In some ways they are similar, but a Ductless System presents many more long term benefits

A Ductless Mini Split System is installed on your wall, and can cool more than just one space, based on how many indoor units are installed. Ductless systems are much more energy efficient and are proven to last much longer. They also come with warranties lasting as long as 10 years!

Window units are relatively cheap to install. However, this is a rather short term benefit. In a short amount of time it can have drastically negative effects on your energy bills. Also, Having a window open 24/7 to accommodate an air conditioner is a safety hazard. It's an open door for burglars.

How much does it cost?

This is a very common and difficult question to answer. The cost can vary greatly based on several factors, including:

  • Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) chosen
  • Size (Tonage) of the system
  • Number of indoor units needed
  • Labor and material involved in completing the installation
